Teixeira has cortisone shot, targeting Sunday

jeudi 26 mai 2016

"I've always dealt with neck and upper back tightness, my entire career, but sometimes it gets too much," Teixeira said. "You treat it, you get massages, you get treatment. [Head athletic trainer] Steve [Donohue] does a great job of calming it down when I need it, but this just got to be too much."

The Yankees do not believe that Teixeira will require a stint on the disabled list. Dustin Ackley started at first base in New York's 8-4 loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, and Girardi gave a starting nod to Austin Romine on Thursday against Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ.

Girardi indicated that he is targeting Teixeira's return for Sunday against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

"My expectation is that he will be out three days and hopefully he's a player the fourth day," Girardi said.

It has been a rough season thus far for Teixeira, who was arguably the Yankees' most valuable player last season before having his season cut short due to a small fracture in his right leg.

He is batting .195 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 42 games and has not homered since April 13; his 124 consecutive homerless at-bats represent the longest power drought of his 14-year career.

"It's not fun, but you've just got to grind through it," Teixeira said. "You've got to grind through every season and help your team win any way you can. If you go 0-for-4 that day, you've got to play great defense, and if you get a chance to get a big hit, you get that big hit. You just fight through it."
