Mets lose Duda to lower-back stress fracture

lundi 23 mai 2016

WASHINGTON -- The Mets placed first baseman Lucas Duda on the disabled list Monday with a stress fracture in his lower back, purchasing the contract of utilityman Ty Kelly from Triple-A Las Vegas and designating left-hander Dario Alvarez for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. There is no timetable for Duda's return.

Duda has missed the Mets' past two games with back woes, receiving a battery of tests at Manhattan's Hospital for Special Surgery. Team orthopedist Dr. David Altchek reviewed Duda's test results on Monday to confirm the diagnosis.

In Duda's absence, the Mets' options at first base range from Eric Campbell to Kelly, who was batting .391/.478/.548 in 35 games at Las Vegas. A 27-year-old switch-hitter whom the Mets signed to a Minor League deal this winter, Kelly is a veteran of eight Minor League seasons but had yet to crack the Majors until Monday.

Other options at Triple-A included the Pacific Coast League's leading hitter, T.J. Rivera, and last year's Las Vegas Player of the Year Travis Taijeron. But both are right-handed, as is much of New York's current bench. Wilmer Flores, who is also right-handed, is due to start a Minor League rehab assignment on Tuesday, and he could rejoin the Mets as soon as Friday. He has been on the DL with a strained left hamstring since May 12.

Duda, 30, leads the Mets with 64 home runs since the start of the 2014 season, but was batting just .231 with a .297 on-base percentage in 39 games this year. He goes on the DL in the midst of a 7-for-42 (.167) slump since hitting his most recent homer.
