It was Goins' first Major League pitching appearance and came after the Blue Jays had used all seven of their relievers. The 28-year-old loaded the bases with one out in the 18th inning, before inducing an inning-ending double play ball to end the frame.
"It just kind of tightened up and it's precautionary," Goins said prior to Saturday's contest against Cleveland. "It's just to see that something [is] not wrong. I'll get it checked out, take a couple of days and go from there."
Goins became the ninth position player to take the mound for the Blue Jays, and was followed to the mound by fellow infielder Darwin Barney, who allowed the go-ahead run in the 19th inning. Goins is not expected to miss any more than the requisite 15-day period.
"It is what it is. I don't regret it at all," Goins said. "I was going out there to get outs and help the team win in whatever way that I could. Things happen in this game and it's just one of those situations. But we'll take a couple of days, get back after it and I'll be back."
In addition to placing Goins on the DL, the Blue Jays also optioned right-hander Bo Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo and recalled right-hander Drew Hutchison, as well as left-hander Aaron Loup.
Schultz pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings on Friday and threw 48 pitches. The Blue Jays opted to go with Goins and Barney instead of one of their starting pitchers. J.A. Happ threw a side session prior to the game, while Saturday's starter, Marco Estrada, has been battling tightness in his back.
Hutchison has made one spot-start for the Blue Jays this season, throwing 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball on April 24 against the A's. The 25-year-old is expected to be an option for manager John Gibbons in long relief. Loup has spent parts of the last five season with the Blue Jays. The 28-year-old southpaw has pitched in seven games for the Blue Jays this season and has allowed four runs over four innings.
