PHILADELPHIA -- Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, starting for just the second time since the All-Star break, moved within four of 3,000 career hits with a pair of singles in Thursday's series finale against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
With the Marlins leading, 7-2, in the eighth, Ichiro singled to right field on a 1-1 slider from reliever Daniel Stumpf for career hit No. 2,996.
Ichiro logged No. 2,995 in the third, knocking a 2-1 changeup from starter Jerad Eickhoff up the middle, where shortstop Freddy Galvis made a sliding grab, but he could not set and get his throw off in time to nab Ichiro at first.
After a three-hit-performance in his last start -- Sunday in St. Louis -- Ichiro had gone hitless in three pinch-hit at-bats through the first three games of the Marlins' series in Philadelphia.
When he does reach the milestone, he'll tie Roberto Clemente for 29th on the all-time hits list.
