Uehara lands on DL with strained pectoral

mercredi 20 juillet 2016

The 41-year-old said after the game that he felt something before the strikeout pitch to Belt.

Uehara's injury is a big blow to the team's bullpen. With Craig Kimbrel on the disabled list with a left knee injury, Uehara had been acting as the team's closer, converting his last five save opportunities.

Right-hander Junichi Tazawa, who's on the disabled list with a right shoulder injury, is expected to return to the bullpen as early as Friday.

Right-hander Brad Ziegler, who was acquired from the D-backs on July 9, had 18 saves while with Arizona.

"As we've had to go to other guys to step up, we'll look to do that. I can't tell you at this point how much time Koji will miss," manager John Farrell said. "Taz is soon to return to us, to give us another quality arm that's a proven late-inning guy. With Brad here, again not knowing how long Koji will be down, we've got other options to go to to close out ballgames."

Likely to handle the ninth inning while Kimbrel and Uehara are on the DL, Ziegler (81 career saves) should be added in virtually all leagues. Despite lacking the swing-and-miss stuff of a typical closer (career 5.9 K/9 rate), Ziegler could compile many saves as the stopper for a contending Red Sox squad. The 36-year-old owns a solid 2.61 ERA this season, and he has tossed three scoreless innings since joining Boston on July 10.
