Story, 23, is batting .272 with 67 runs, 21 doubles, four triples, 27 home runs, 72 RBIs, 35 walks and eight stolen bases in 97 games as a rookie. Entering Tuesday, his 27 home runs led the National League and his 72 RBIs were fifth in the NL.
The injury to Story comes at a particularly bad time for Colorado, as the club's MLB-best 12-5 record since the All-Star break pulled it to within 4 1/2 games of the second NL Wild Card spot. The Rockies' next two series are against teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race -- the Dodgers and the club currently occupying the second NL Wild Card spot, the Marlins.
Story had been red hot to start the second half, posting a .340/.417/.698 slash line with six home runs and 16 RBIs in 16 games.
"Just very disappointing," Story said. "Very frustrating. The timing of it all is the worst part of it."
X-rays on Story's thumb were negative, but an MRI exam revealed the ligament damage. Manager Walt Weiss said veteran Daniel Descalso, rookie Cristhian Adames and the switch-hitting Ynoa would man the position in Story's absence.
Ynoa, 28, will be making his first appearance on the active roster this season. In 94 games with Albuquerque, he batted .266 with 49 runs, 24 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 27 RBIs, 37 walks and five stolen bases.
Ynoa played in 72 games for the Rockies last season, hitting .260/.277/.339 with eight doubles, a triple and nine RBIs in 131 plate appearances.
