Blue Jays to keep Sanchez in rotation

jeudi 4 août 2016

The team had been considering reconverting Sanchez into a reliever to limit his workload. Instead, he'll stay atop the rotation for a Blue Jays team leading the American League Wild Card race by two games. Toronto is just a game behind Baltimore in the AL East.

Sanchez, 24, has been a huge part of that. The righty has been one of baseball's best pitchers since making the Blue Jays' rotation out of Spring Training. He's 11-1 with an AL-best 2.71 ERA, while ranking in the top 10 in WHIP, opponent batting average and hits allowed per nine innings.

Sanchez was an All-Star for the first time this season, but he's also already set a career high in innings pitched with 139 1/3 frames. His previous career high came in 2014, when he threw 133 1/3 innings across three levels, including the Majors. Though Sanchez has no history of arm trouble, the Blue Jays planned to keep his workload in check with an eye toward his long-term health. His exceptional performance this season, coupled with Toronto's postseason hopes, now complicate that.
