Snell settles in after 1st in impressive debut

samedi 23 avril 2016

The first inning was rough on the left-hander, as he needed 24 pitches to get through five batters, allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and needed a leaping catch against the left-field wall by Desmond Jennings on a deep drive from Alex Rodriguez to bail him out of the frame.

After that, however, Snell settled down and began baffling Yankees batters. The 23-year-old struck out the side in the second inning, buckling Brian McCann at the knees with a huge hooking curveball for the first out. All six of Snell's strikeouts came against veteran hitters, as he set down McCann and Chase Headley twice and Starlin Castro and Rodriguez once.

Snell did have a little bit of trouble with control, letting loose two wild pitches, including one that allowed Carlos Beltran to score in the first inning. He was able to work around his second wild pitch, however, as even though the errant throw moved Jacoby Ellsbury to second base in the third inning, Snell stranded him there.

After the first inning, Snell allowed only two baserunners: Ellsbury via a third-inning single and Didi Gregorius on an error by shortstop Brad Miller with two outs in the fifth.
