The 27-year-old carries a 5-2 record in his career against Toronto, the most wins he's compiled against any team. Tanaka pitched against the Blue Jays on April 12 at Rogers Centre and finished with a no-decision after allowing two runs over five innings.
Sanchez has been a sturdy member of Toronto's pitching staff through the first two months of the season, after earning the final spot in the rotation with a solid Spring Training.
The 23-year-old has allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts, and he threw six innings of two-run ball against the Yankees on April 12.
Three things to know about this game
• Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced on Tuesday that utility man Dustin Ackley will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and miss the remainder of the season. Ackley was injured diving back into first base during the sixth inning of New York's 2-1 victory over the Rays on Sunday.
• The Blue Jays added some bullpen help prior to Tuesday's game against the Yankees, acquiring veteran right-handed reliever Jason Grilli from the Braves for prospect Sean Ratcliffe. The 39-year-old Grilli is 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 21 appearances for Atlanta this season and is expected to join the club on Wednesday.
• Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez remained out of New York's starting lineup for a second consecutive game on Tuesday and is in the midst of a 1-for-16 slump since his return from the disabled list. Rodriguez is hitless against Sanchez in five at-bats.
