NEW YORK -- An injury-riddled team took another significant blow Tuesday night, when Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon left after taking a comebacker off his right thumb to open his outing against the Royals. X-rays taken on the thumb were negative, and the team diagnosed the injury as a bruise. Colon departed after the Mets got an out on the play, forcing the club to cobble together 26 more from its bullpen.
Leading off the game, Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield hit Colon's fourth pitch back to the mound, where the 43-year-old pitcher attempted to glove it but missed. The ball instead ricocheted off his right hand, trickling from there toward the right side of the infield.
Neil Walker adjusted to record the out, but after a brief visit from manager Terry Collins and trainer Ray Ramirez, Colon departed. The Mets turned from there to reliever Hansel Robles, who spent several minutes warming up.
The Mets did recall an extra pitcher, Sean Gilmartin, prior to Tuesday's game. But Gilmartin threw 100 pitches on Sunday for Triple-A Las Vegas, enough for Collins to say before the game that the left-hander would be unavailable.
