Manager Dave Roberts had previously said that the plan was to activate Van Slyke in the next two days, with Puig to the DL as a possibility, but the team instead announced the move just minutes before Friday's game.
"They're tricky, especially when you have a history of that injury," Roberts said to reporters before the move was made. "So that's why we're trying to be sensitive to that, for the short term, for the long term, and for Yasiel."
Van Slyke recently finished an eight game rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga and Triple-A Oklahoma City and was present in the Dodger clubhouse before Friday's game.
Howie Kendrick was also out of the lineup Friday for a second straight game since hurting his shoulder playing first base Wednesday, but Roberts said that the veteran was already feeling better and should be back in the lineup by Saturday. He was also available off the bench for Friday's game.
"He says the discomfort has dissipated since yesterday," Roberts said. "It didn't come out of the socket or anything like that. I just felt for today, it's prudent to give him that extra day and I'll get him back in there tomorrow."
