Yo remains day to day, could return Monday

MIAMI -- A day after he was a late scratch with a sore right hip, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes felt better, but he was still not in the Mets' starting lineup for their series finale against the Marlins. Cespedes remains day to day, and he could return to the lineup as soon as Monday in Pittsburgh.

The Mets were also awaiting an update late Sunday morning on fellow outfielder Juan Lagares, who was due to see an orthopedist regarding his bruised left thumb. Lagares injured the digit making a diving catch in the sixth inning of Saturday's win.

With those two shelved, and David Wright, Lucas Duda and Travis d'Arnaud all on the disabled list for the foreseeable future, the Mets proceeded on Sunday with a lineup composed of four players not on their Opening Day card. Injuries have piled up to such an extent for the Mets that manager Terry Collins used pitcher Jacob deGrom as a pinch-hitter in Saturday's game, and he spent Sunday morning talking to other pitchers about their availability. Collins went as far as to quip that he couldn't use first- or third-base coach Tom Goodwin or Tim Teufel in a game.

"All you can do is think about what you're going to do next to replace them," Collins said of his injured players. "You can't sit there and worry about stuff that's out of your control. All I do is see who I've got, see where I can put them in the lineup and try to make sure we have nine."

The Mets' most productive slugger over the first third of the season, Cespedes entered Sunday's play batting .278 with a team-high 15 home runs. Lagares is hitting .276 with two homers, starting regularly against lefties but receiving much of his playing time as a late-inning defensive sub.
